Gardening:  When we bought our house, the very first thing we did, before we even moved our things, was to dig a vegetable garden.  The spot we chose had been sod, and was near the gravel drive, so there was a lot of grass and stones in the plot.  Janine spent several days sifting the top 3 inches of soil to get the larger pieces out.  We then added peat, because the soil is very sandy and the peat would hold the moisture.  That first year, we planted tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, peas, green and yellow beans, marigolds and sunflowers.  It was a fairly small garden, but it produced an unbelievable amount of produce!  This year (year 2) we have added compost to the garden and slightly enlarged it.

When we bought the house, the only landscaping around the house was some very large trees and a row of "burning bushes" planted much too close together along the front porch.  We dug up all the burning bushes and moved them around the yard, so they would have space to grow.  We also planted about 50 other trees; mostly evergreens, but also planted a few sugar maples, tulip poplars, and lilacs.  In addition, we got lots of perennials from Jason's sister and other friends and made flower beds around the house.
